What is Feather Edge Fencing?

You may have heard of feather edge fencing but might not be entirely sure what it is or what it entails.

So, what is feather edge fencing? Feather-edge fencing is a fencing style that involves installing individual pieces of timber that overlap one another. One side is typically thicker than the other, giving feathered-edge fences their distinctive tapered appearance.

Feather edge fencing is achieved by attaching the timber to cross rails. Given the intricacy of the work, it is best performed by fencing professionals.

In this article, we discuss the principles, along with their benefits and drawbacks, helping provide an idea of when to opt for feather edge fencing.

What’s the Difference Between Feather Edge Fencing and Standard Fencing?

Most of us understand the importance of fencing for creating a boundary and providing privacy. However, what are the differences between feather-edge fencing and standard fencing?

Standard fencing is typically designed with flat, tightly butted boards that are pre-fabricated. This traditional fencing style gives external areas a streamlined, uniform appearance. Feather-edged fencing is more intricate, being built and installed on-site. Fencing can also be made to order, so it fits the exact dimensions of your garden.

What are the Benefits of Feather Edge Fencing?

Feather edge fencing is a great way to enhance your garden’s aesthetic appeal, especially if you seek a textured and rustic style. It is typically easier to repair damaged timber pieces than fixed panels. It is also a highly flexible fencing option as it can be designed to fit the contours of your space – helpful when you have uneven ground.

Due to the nature of their design, feather edged fences have slight gaps between boards, giving them an advantage when it comes to drainage.

When to opt for Feather Edge Fencing

Feather edge fencing is ideal for those who want to add character to their external space.

If you are seeking practical fencing that prioritises privacy and security, standard fencing might be a better option. Feather edge fencing often comes at a lower price point, but you may have to pay more in general maintenance – particularly if you live in exposed areas with strong winds.

110ft Close Board Fence Installation –
Social Club, Greenford

We were asked to install a new 110ft close board fence for a social club in Greenford, replacing an existing fence. The fence was constructed using mortised concrete posts, triangular arris rails and concrete gravel boards.

The Challenge

There were two main challenges on this project:

1. There were different ground levels between the club’s property and the neighbouring garden, which meant a standard straight fence line could not be used.

2. There was also a large tree positioned directly within the fence line.

Our Approach

The existing fence and concrete posts were removed and disposed of before installation began.

A new fence line was then set out to bridge the change in levels between the two properties.

Where the tree obstructed the line, the fence was pulled back towards the club to work around it.

The Result

The new fence runs across the full 110ft with a consistent line, adjusted to suit the ground levels and site conditions.
